Portage Lake Kayak & Canoe Launch Project Update
Onekama Township has been awarded $75,900 from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund to create an Explore the Shores site at Portage Lake. The site will include a kayak and canoe dock/launch that will be accessible to people of all ages, needs, abilities, and skill levels. In addition, new parking spaces and pathways will make access to the launch accessible to everyone.
The total project costs are $101,200 and there have been two $5,000 donations to date. Additional donations are being accepted by the Manistee County Community Foundation.
Spicer Group, an engineering firm with offices in Manistee, is the project engineer and did the preliminary design work for the project. Spicer Group is projecting the completion of the project to be during the summer of 2018.
The Portage Lake Kayak & Canoe Launch is the 23rd Explore the Shores project, a program created 10 years ago by the AES in 2008 to provide access to people of all ages, needs, and abilities to enjoy Manistee County’s bounty of water resources. Since its inception, AES has helped communities secure over $9 million for Manistee County in grants and charitable contributions from 24 sources to create access to Lake Michigan, fishing piers, fish cleaning stations, anglers paths, children’s play areas, fishing platforms, scenic overlooks and others. Explore the Shores is primarily a Manistee County program but is reaching into Benzie and Wexford Counties to create even greater universal access opportunities regionally.
